Eu Amar Eles!
The assignment for watching an international Movie was fun to do! To be completely honest I have been watching Brazilian movies for a while or just any show in Portuguese to better learn the language. Learning Portuguese is one of my goals at the moment. I have a lot of friends from Brazil and absolutely adore the people and culture. It has been neat to see how differently the media represents each country. For example, a lot of Brazilian shows and movies depict a tight familial bond and friendship. As well as the men in the movies show a lot more emotion than in American films. There is also lots of diversity shown. I will say that women are still held to beauty ideals but it is different from America. In Brazilian films, it is less about skinny women but more about curvy women. I can definitely say this impacts women like it does in America just on different preferences. I know this observation is accurate because on my mission one of the sisters from Brazil that I was close to made comments of her specifically wanting more curvature to her body, and to make this clear she is already absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, it seems that women are held to unideal beauty standards all over the world. However, there was much more good shown in the movies and shows. I loved the emphasis on family and men showing more emotion than was shown, and based on talking to my Brazilian friends, family is sacred in their culture. There is also way more outward expression of love, through physical touch. Anywho, I love how even though it isn’t always perfect we can learn a lot about other cultures nowadays through media. Luckily, I’ve had my friends let me know what is accurate and not, and when they have asked me questions about American stereotypes it has been pretty fun to learn about this as well. Eu Amar Eles!
Thank you for sharing! Very interesting to hear about differences in cultures and their portrayals in media. This teaches about the emphasis on family and friendship in Brazilian culture. Also interesting to learn about beauty ideals in Brazil.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting to hear that beauty standards exist differently around the world. I have mixed feelings about international cinema so I am curious to see how this assignment will go.
ReplyDeleteBrasil! <3 Serving in Brazil really illustrated for me the potential for inclusivity within communities. The cheek kisses are one of the things I miss the most! I agree that watching movies in other language can be super informative! It makes you pay a lot more attention! I have watched some of the Netflix movies that have been made in Portuguese and it was SUCH A TRIP.
